Origins and Mission

Save the Pastoralists Kenya (STP) emerged from the grassroots efforts of the Lokitela Etuko Pastoralists Association (LEPA), founded in 2014. LEPA was established to safeguard the vital grazing lands of the Lokitela Etuko community from encroaching urban development and land grabbing. Through advocacy and community engagement, LEPA successfully advocated for the protection of these critical rangelands near Lodwar Town municipality. In a formalization process that began in June 2023 Save The
Pastoralists Kenya (STP) was finally registered on March 2024 by the NGO Coordination Board under Kenya’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Regional Coordination with a registration number OP.218/051/23-408/13511.

  • Sensitization and Mobilization: STP Kenya/LEPA successfully conducted over ten sensitization and mobilization meetings with resident pastoralist groups, fostering awareness and understanding of their rights and the importance of sustainable land management.
  • Community-Led Planning: The organization empowered ten pastoralist committees to develop detailed grazing plans for both the dry and wet seasons, ensuring the equitable and efficient use of resources.
Institutional Development and Governance
  • Community Committees: STP Kenya supported the formation of ten pastoralist committees representing communities surrounding the Lokite Etuko grazing field. These committees elected their own leadership, demonstrating a commitment to self-governance and community empowerment.
  • Land Protection: The ten community committees played a crucial role in safeguarding the grazing field from land grabbers, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
Advocacy and Collaboration
  • Government Recognition: The County Government of Turkana acknowledged the valuable work of the organized community committees, recognizing their expertise and contributions to local development.
  • Strategic Partnerships: STP Kenya collaborated with government agencies, such as the Ministry of Lands and Trade, on projects that impacted the pastoralist community. The organization successfully advocated for the protection of the grazing field while supporting the development of the County Aggregation and Integrated Industrial Park (CAIIP) in a mutually beneficial manner.

These achievements highlight STP Kenya’s commitment to community-led development, sustainable land management, and effective advocacy.
