Our Impact
Save The Pastoralists Kenya (STP) has significantly impacted pastoralist communities, particularly in Turkana County, through initiatives that enhance resilience, protect livelihoods, and promote sustainable development:
Community Empowerment and Land Protection
STP originated from the Lokitela Etuko Pastoralists Association (LEPA), which successfully safeguarded vital grazing lands near Lodwar Town from encroachment. Building on this, STP facilitated the formation of ten community committees that developed seasonal grazing plans and elected their own leadership. These committees played a crucial role in protecting grazing fields from land grabbers and were recognized by the Turkana County Government for their contributions to local development.
Sustainable Livelihoods and Food Security
STP promotes climate-smart agriculture by encouraging the cultivation of drought-resistant crops like sorghum and millet. This also includes the need to construct rainwater harvesting structures, and employment of conservation farming practices. Community gardens and nutrition education programs are paramount in the establishment of supplementary food production and improvement of dietary diversity.
Healthcare and Reproductive Services
The organization plns to provide access to family planning services and ensures quality maternal and child health services, including antenatal care, safe delivery, and postnatal care to inaccessible rural women. These services will address specific healthcare needs through specialized camps, that will be promoting preventive care within the communities.
Environmental Conservation
STP engages in environmental conservation efforts such as the need to educate pastorlists on the importance of tree planting campaigns, establishment of community tree nurseries, and promotion of agroforestry. These initiatives aim to restore vegetation cover, prevent soil erosion, and improve soil fertility. STP works closely with the ten communities committees to plan and implement the rotational grazing practices and soil conservation techniques to combat desertification and maintain soil health.
Advocacy and Policy Engagement
STP advocates for the rights of pastoralist communities by educating them on their constitutional rights and engaging in policy discussions. The organization collaborates with government agencies, such as the Ministry of Lands and Trade, to support projects that impact pastoralist communities, ensuring that their voices are heard in decision-making processes.
STP has empowered pastoralist communities by enhancing their capacity to manage resources sustainably, improving access to essential services, and advocating for their rights. These efforts have contributed to building resilient and sustainable livelihoods for pastoralists in Kenya.
